    Great videos on this subject - I'm an Inline skater - Rollerblade's and just loving the skate park stuff but I'm finding that I'm getting attacked by loose dogs as there are more and more a-hole dog owners out there not keeping their dogs on leash, and ... being attacked the last time by surprise, I spun around and swore at it full noise as it was charging at me, it stopped and walked off, and then I left immediately to avoid any more... on inline skates there is a lot less stability, and I find that I'm having to scope out the park first before I put my inlines on, and if they show up in the mean time, I leave, I feel I have to leave.... I told an owner one time because of his dog I have to leave, then straight away I saw out of the corner of my eye the dog lay a turd right in the middle of the skatepark, and all the kids and adults all reacted accordingly. Is there any specific other pointers you can give to inline skaters down the skate park???

    Just to add my 2 cents: Always walk the dog with full awareness of surroundings. No mobile phones! Absolutely no earphones! No sitting in the park with your favorite book! No chatting with other dog owners without watching around as a hawk! Know your dog. Watch the behavior. Sudden quick twitch of the ear? Sudden misstep while walking? Dog looks in certain direction but you see nothing? BELIEVE YOUR DOG! This got me and my dogs a zillion times out of 4 and 2 legged trouble! Don't wait to see what is coming towards you from the bushes, darkness, behind the wall... Being aware all the time before this point, you already know where to hide, where to retreat, how to avoid suspicious area! Don't wait! Disappear! Better to miss a surprise meeting with a friendly neighbor and his good doggie than to facilitate sure meeting with something sinister. You think I am a coward? I don't mind, you will remember me when got cornered with two thugs with 3 crazy dogs - happened to my neighbor with a toy dog... You know the result, tomorrow's local newspaper black page story... Dog training: These commands are to be obeyed promptly without hesitation: -Turning head when you call -Stop -Heel -Sit -No! -Lay down -Release -Spit Command should be given ONCE and the dog should react swiftly and happy to oblige All other things - play dead, where is granny, fetch ball... optional, when you achieve commands from above Commands should be practiced daily, with or without a reason Each of my dogs over the years - 2 black labradors, mixed street dog and Pekingese - could play fetch in the crowded park, without bothering other people, kids or dogs... They were trained that if the child took their ball they will sit and wait for MY command, not jumping around in expectation that kid trows the ball, and IF the kid will actually did throw the ball, they will NOT run, they will look at me waiting for command. The only way to achieve this is to WORK WITH YOUR DOG, from puppyhood, from the first moment fluffy joy entered your life.

    Hi! I play tennis. Can you please recommend some footwork drills that can help me move faster. for example, reaching fast when the opponent hits a really fast groundstrokes, just like Alcaraz reaches almost everywhere. Thanks!

    • @athleticengine
      @athleticengine 16 дней назад

      If you want to move faster, you have to learn the skill of “lightness” on your feet. That means you need to be able to “unweight” your body very quickly and easily. It doesn’t really matter what footwork drills you do, there are an infinite number. What matters is HOW you move when you practice them. So my recommendation to you is when you’re playing tennis, running, working on footwork drills, etc try to be as silent as possible on your feet. The more noise you make on the ground, the more inefficiently you’re moving. You can move fast, inefficiently. Many athletes do. But it’s not sustainable. You will suffer more injuries. Alcaraz has already had many injuries and he’s only 21, playing a non-contact sport. He is a great tennis player but he does not move efficiently. Don’t bother focusing on speed. Speed is an OUTCOME. Focus on the quality of your ground interaction. Figure out how to move as quietly as possible. The better you can master that, the quicker and more agile you will become, will less risk of injuries. In addition you have to keep your body structure in a state where it’s capable of moving efficiently, which doesn’t come from doing footwork drills but from keeping your joints decompressed, building integrity and connective strength (not muscular), keeping your muscles supple and relaxed, etc. Unfortunately it’s not as simple as doing some footwork drills, especially because most athletes/people in general are starting from a deficit and a weakened structure due to lifestyle factors like excessive use of chairs and poorly designed modern footwear. Work at it! 🪶

    • @thehappyman2274
      @thehappyman2274 14 дней назад

      @athleticengine To be honest, this is the most unique answer I got on footwork. Before playing a tennis match, I do lots of footwork drills but was still not able to move faster or reach the ball when my opponent hit 100 mph groundstrokes and serve. I thought my reflexes might be weak. Then, I found your video on RUclips. You gave a correct answer to my question on improving reflexes on tennis. There's lots of noise when I run on tennis court. Can I get more information about the skill of lightness on my feet? Is there more effective ways to unweight my body and feet quickly? Is there an athlete who did this?

    • @athleticengine
      @athleticengine 14 дней назад

      @@thehappyman2274 Lightness on your feet is a combination of things - perception, skeletal alignment, tensegrity strength, coordination and rhythm, etc - all can be improved with the right training process. I help athletes with this who work with me either in person or virtually. Right now I’m working with a group of young tennis players once a week on this stuff and some of them are starting to show more lightness on their feet already in just one month, one hour per week. One tip I can offer you as a good starting point is to get your alignment properly assessed. If your body is poorly aligned, if your hips don’t have SPACE to rotate correctly as you run, if your feet/ankles collapse when you run, etc then you will not be as light and quick as you can. The $87 assessment offered through our website is the best initial investment any athlete who is serious about improving can make because it will show you OBJECTIVELY where you really are right now structurally and then you will know what needs to be fixed to improve how you move. Otherwise you’re just guessing. In terms of athletes, there aren’t many modern day ones who move very well, despite the fact that there are many who perform at a super high level. That is why the injury rates continue to soar. If you want an example of light footwork, look up old clips of Muhammad Ali. Look up clips of how Bruce Lee moved. In tennis, Sampras had very athletic footwork in his younger days. Federer had good footwork too. Footwork isn’t just about getting to balls… it’s about getting to them in a way that you’re balanced, you own your axis, you’re ready to strike, you use as little energy as possible, and you can slow down, change direction etc on a dime. No loud, clunky steps. I wish you all the best in your training. If you’re serious about addressing this I would recommend you do the assessment and see what shape (structurally) your body is truly in right now so you know what to prioritize in training without wasting time and effort.

    Thank you very much for this video. The sitting and standing positions you have presented here are incredibly powerful in allowing continual spinal decompression, while I go about my day. And the active functional stretch makes so much sense, while being wonderfully effective. My body is starting to feel strong and able again, while finally beginning to feel the benefits from continual healing (instead of the roller coaster of stretch/compression/stretch, which really wears down one's mental health in recovery). I am so grateful for the generous guidance of your videos.

    I appreciate the message, however, in my barefoot rebuild and journey (over 20 years), I've realized the only time I could properly forefoot walk was while completely barefoot. And since it is most often not possible due to climate and/or location (shops, etc), I found my best bet is to walk in a cushioned shoe (heel-strike), but run in a barefoot shoe (forefoot run). And I'm at home most often, which facilitates most of my day and week being barefoot (forefoot walking), so I maintain good foot flexibility and ankle strength. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this matter. Thank you very much for this video.

    • @athleticengine
      @athleticengine 17 дней назад

      I can totally understand it’s not realistic to be barefoot all the time in the environments most of us live in. What I would say is always move as if you are barefoot. So even if you have shoes on, make sure your shoes do not alter the way you are using your feet in the shoe. For example where I am I occasionally wear slide on slippers with a very cushioned sole - they are far from ideal, but I’m aware enough of how I walk in them so that I’m not allowing all that cushioning to change my gait. Just walk the surface barefoot first, be aware of how you have to walk to be comfortable without the protection, and then when the protection is there, don’t change anything about how you use your foot. So barefoot or not, move as if you’re barefoot. Hope that is clear and helps.

    • @SingAndMoveForLife
      @SingAndMoveForLife 16 дней назад

      @@athleticengine Thank you for your response. I completely understand. And as mentioned above, I attempted for years to keep the forefoot walk/proper barefoot gait while wearing any shoes. After many years of trying, I found it was not becoming effortless, it looked strange, felt strange, and I would ultimately get frustrated from mental and physical fatigue, and rip off my shoes and carry them for the remainder of one such walk with the family. That can't be done in the winter. Nor do I wish to have to wash my feet upon returning home each time. I had to accept that it wasn't something that training could permanently alter, as I had thought. Thank you for your thoughts, though. It's just easier without shoes, unless I'm running. I read the article 'Learn to Walk' many years ago. It was a game-changer, as I was born with a right foot (toes) deformity, and wanted good foot and shoe habits for my children.

My one question is, can you please share your position on treadmills. Jogging outside works in a completely different way for my body than on a treadmill, so I don't go on them. But I'm really interested in hearing your perspective, considering your background and experience. Thanks!

    • @athleticengine
      @athleticengine 17 дней назад

      Yes treadmills change the way you interact with the surface. It’s too unnatural. The surface itself is of course unnatural as well, but the ground moving beneath you and you just trying to keep up with the ground is different physics than moving your own body through space. In my view and from what I’ve observed, it encourages inefficient landing and in no way does it prepare someone realistically for actual running on the real ground (which you’ve already observed yourself as you said running outside works in a completely different way from your body). I don’t have much else to say about them, I just think that the further we get from nature, the more problems we invite. And treadmills are quite far from nature. Thanks for your comment, I’m glad to hear that your son is enjoying the routine! 🙏🏽

    • @athleticengine
      @athleticengine Месяц назад

      Yoga if learned and practiced properly (not the typical westernized studio yoga) is an excellent practice for aligning the system. Muscle stretching is not a good idea though. I don’t see any animals or infants stretching muscles. Many of the yoga postures however resemble child and animal poses and are even named after them sometimes (child pose, down dog, cat stretch, etc). Stretching muscles leads to problems. Think of stretching the body into geometrically sound positions, not stretching muscles. If you stretch muscles without attention to holistic geometry of the system you will cause injuries. Yoga poses are all about the geometry of the whole body.

      The proof and the examples are literally everywhere in nature, the problem is you can’t see it because you’ve been conditioned to need “references” from some imaginary authority. If you want proof, learn basic physics, geometry, and math and apply it to human movement. Or simply observe what happens all throughout nature with open eyes. I mentioned in the video some things the athletes should do. Eliminate chairs from their life which will eliminate one major source of problem, and learn how to decompress the system as a whole and build integrity and efficient coordination rather than “stretch and strengthen muscles” which will allow the body to manage energy more efficiently. That really sums it up.

When you compare old racket (like POG 107) and modern racket (like Pure Drive), you don’t have a big difference in term of playability but you have an enormous difference in term of confort. And of course, monofilament string didn’t help And of course you can have your point into the mix !

Our shelter was made Low Kill 20 yrs ago or more. Their vets heal what they can. Our City council step up and get portable buildings to house cats to make room for dogs. And expand the shelter and servic1es as our population continuously grows. Wood staffs online about $20. Metal hiking poles $10-20. Director is threatening euthenasia. Walmart & online has $10 pepper gel spray canisters w velcro wrist loop. There is a dog spray safe for eyes but idk the name. We have a real health crisis. Thanks. Im sharing this on NEXT DOOR and our neighborhood association Facebook page too. Thanks for lessons.

    Lets be honest now if a dog charges at you you arent gonna live trying to block his attacks you gotta bring that leg back like your about to score a game winning goal

    Some good tips. In the assessment phase I would try to determine relative weight, if the attack is solo/pack, trained/untrained, and possible attack motive to shape my response. I recommend using natural advantages that humans have but dogs do not. SUPERIOR BRAIN or out think a dog. For example, a dog cannot open a door, turn devices on/off, react well to simple diversions. ABILITY TO HOLD OBJECTS IN HANDS. For example, improvised weapons, intervening objects, distracting items, shielding/armor items. RANGED OR TECHNOLOGICAL ATTACK. Throw (or kick) objects, throw irritants, throw distractions, make noise, make flame, use available speed enhancers gravity, water, frictionless surfaces.

    in my experience, your posture and body language do make a huge difference to dogs especially, there's a huge unchained dog that sits out on the side of the road next to where I used to live, and I'd walk by it every day and give it a pet, meanwhile my brother would nervously run on the other side to avoid it, and ended up getting chased and having is sweater torn up by it.

    You can also just keep some dog treats if you're that scared of dog attacks.

    Have had my nose in dog books since I was 5, lets just say a long time ago. I also have owned many dogs over that lifetime. Still have and love dogs. However as a group dog owners are some of the dumbest don't care about anyone ignorant people I have ever met. Our local rec area has a leash law. I can't tell you how many people knowing this still let their dogs off and will tell you too bad I like them off leash. Example at the boat launch watch a couple with their small kid playing in the water with Rotti off leash. Dog rushed up to guy launching kayak growling and barking in his face, within about 2 inches. Little kid says something to mom who replies oh dozer would never bite. I said flat out you should leash it and it better not do that to us. They ignored me and kept right on. Lucky it didn't do the same to us . This is not isolated guy grabs off leash Australian cattle dog as I mountain bike. Kid said oh he like to chase and nip bikers. Would have like to tell him then his dog would be hurtin as well as his dog but the kid was small so I let it go. In short I used to be that guy until my off leash dog on a trail I never saw people on scared the hell out of a family. Guy looked like he wanted to punch me and I couldn't blame him. I never let them off leash since. I also now carry bear mace and a large knife while biking there. Hope I don't have to use them but first off leash dog that rushes me aggressively or bites the dog and owner will pay the price. Too bad cops, rangers, env. police don't see to want to actually enforce the law oh Massachusetts what can you do.

    Unfortunately, the problem is usually dog owners especially the ones that keep big aggressive dogs!
